Seguin is located in Guadalupe County, Texas. As a large producer of pecans, Seguin is nicknamed the “Pecan Capital of Texas.” Seguin has the “World’s Largest Pecan,” which is a concrete structure located in front of the county’s courthouse. The pecan is five feet long and two and a half feet wide.
Seguin is home to the historic Wilson Pottery Site which was the first freed slave business in Texas. The Sepastopol House, which was built in 1856, is also located in Seguin and is in the National Register of Historic Places.
Seguin is a charming city with scenic views of the Guadalupe River winding through the city’s south side. Here you’ll be able to relax and take in the fresh air and enjoy the city’s rich history and unique culture.
Seguin History
Members of Mathew Caldwell’s Gonzales Rangers established Seguin in 1838. The town was incorporated in 1853. Seguin was originally named Walnut Springs because of the fresh water sources nearby. The town’s name was changed just six months later to honor Colonel Juan N. Seguin.
Many settlers came to Seguin from the south hoping to establish cotton plantations. Instead, Seguin became a center for experimenting with using concrete as building material. Because of this, Seguin had one of the greatest concentrations of concrete buildings in the country. Sadly only about 20 of these buildings stand today.
After World War II, many new industries arrived. Today there are many plants located in Seguin for steel, mowing equipment, electronic products, and more.
