New Braunfels TX Area Guide

Couple moving boxesNew Braunfels is located in the central part of Texas, and is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan area. A home-rule city under Texas law, New Braunfels is governed by a seven-member council and has over 500 employees. New Braunfels has a number of local advisory committees, boards, and commissions who make recommendations to the City Council regarding policies and the operation of several city departments.

New Braunfels is a popular tourist destination particularly because of the cold-spring rivers that run through the city. Many people return time and time again during the summer to tube down the Guadalupe River and Comal River. New Braunfels is the site of one of the most famous water parks in the United States, the Schlitterbahn Water Park Resort.

New Braunfels History

HistoryUnder the leadership and direction of Prince Solms, many German merchants, tradesmen, and farmers moved to the New Braunfels area. They wanted the opportunity to own land and more personal freedom. New Braunfels was not a planned area to develop in. The area was first used as a resting and resupply area because of its convenient location at the junction of the Comal and Guadalupe River.

Prince Carl of Solms established New Braunfels in 1845. He named the city after his hometown in Germany. Immigrants began arriving in Texas in December of 1844 so they could receive land grants purchased by Prince Carl. By then spring of 1845, settlers had established a fort, divided the land, and had begun building homes and planting crops. By 1850 New Braunfels was the fourth largest city in Texas, with a population of 1,723 people.
