McQueeney History
German settlers first moved to the area around 1870. The Galveston, Harrisburg, and San Antonio railroad was built through the area in 1876 and the stop was named Hilda. C.F. Blumberg, a local businessman, built a general store east of the rail stop in 1900. In hopes to move the stop from Hilda to his store, he called the area where his store was McQueeney, in honor of the local railroad superintendent. The railroad stop was not moved, but the post office that opened in 1900 there was also called McQueeney.
In 1914 McQueeney had two general stores and forty residents. At the end of the twentieth century, McQueeney had approximately 2500 residents. Lake McQueeney, also known as Lake Abbott, was built a mile northeast of the community in 1925 by means of a dam across the Guadalupe River. It became a popular area for recreation and summer homes.
Lake McQueeney
Lake McQueeney was created in 1925 by a dam across the Guadalupe River. Largemouth bass and white crappie are the most popular sport fish in Lake McQueeney. The lake is home to many aquatic plant species, including cattail, pondweeds, American lotus, spatterdock, and rushes. Channel catfish are the most abundant catfish species. Bluegill, redear and other sunfish species are plentiful and can provide excellent fishing for everyone.
Habitat in Lake McQueeney consists primarily of boat docks, piers, bulkheads, overhanging brush, and floating-leaf vegetation. Isolated submerged trees, stumps, and brush can be found throughout the reservoir, providing excellent ambush and resting cover for most game fish species. The upper portion of Lake McQueeney contains rock and gravel within the river channel, while the lower portion consists of steep banks with a mud and clay bottom.
